The driver was killed after he exited his vehicle to make a phone call and was struck by a vehicle on southbound I-495, nearing the I-295 northbound on-ramp. AdvertisementJeffrey said he was awakened early Saturday by his mother’s scream.“One of the friends in my brother’s car called my father,” Jeffrey said. “My mother came downstairs crying, ‘Jim got killed.’”According to Jeffrey, his brother was on the phone trying to get a ride when he was struck and left to die.“They got into an accident … but everybody was OK,” he said of the initial impact.According to a release issued by state police, Williams was in a 2000 Toyota Avalon with two adult passengers when the first in a series of crashes occurred around 4:15 a.m.Williams was traveling from I-495 southbound onto the ramp to I-295 when he failed to remain in the travel lane and the left front corner of the vehicle struck the Jersey barrier for the first point of impact. As a result of the impact, state police said, the vehicle swerved across the travel lane rotating in a counterclockwise direction and left the roadway onto the grass area. As it traveled through the grass the vehicle flipped and struck a tree for a second point of impact.
